A scientist and his daughter have disappeared in space. A rescue mission fi nds them in a kitsch decor combining exoticism and High Tech, Robby (a talkative robot) and music composed by computer. While SF was exploding in Hollywood, Forbidden Planet, far removed from the anti-communist diatribes in vogue, especially depicts a world where the desire for knowledge is haunted by a death drive. Freely adapted from Shakespeare’s The Tempest, it is a classic of the genre and has inspired more than one director, from Kubrick to Burton.
