Work and machines is a known equation that the cinema has largely seized on. But there is another issue at stake here. Few machines are shown on the screen; work even less. It is more about the cinematic machine, and the setting in motion of the fixed shot at the start of the film unequivocally indicates this. Rather, the question is this: what work do machines do to us, to our perception, and how do they affect our gestures and desires?
This is why our young Polish directors let other devices bear the image. Children’s rides, aviation, a machine born with the century, of which Mielec with its modernist architecture, is one of the capitals. But also other places, other activities, deserted terraces, where some agitated supporters are confined, to a recording studio where retired people rehearse to be singers for a day. The film is enigmatic and by not forcing things, from one activity to another, it is deployed like a mechanism with unpredictable springs, made of echoes, resonances and arrangements. From game machines to a story dreamed up by a worker from work avoidance strategies, from recorded singing to gestures of automatic trance by football fans, the field increases. And a certain history of the 20th century takes shape in intaglio with the reconstruction of a futurist ballet performed in 1968, celebrating the Machine and the Factory with capital letters, in all their majesty and utopian aspect, a far away echo of Aelita by Yacov Protozanov.
