| | The “encounters” on offer here don’t just bring fragments of space or biographies into contact with each other, but also ample chunks of duration. That is the film’s aim – to bank on the permanence of beauty and its capacity to engender time. Who are these producers of duration? Popular poets from Alentejo and a few films by Portuguese directors Antonio Reis and Paulo Rocha. Poems set out to meet landscapes; filmed landscapes are peopled by peasant extras and actors; traditional songs transit from Portugal to Corsica to intertwine in the present day. It’s not a question of constantly rehashing the memory of a culture threatened with extinction and writing up its sad obituary, but rather of ushering through dynamic forces that care not a jot about divisions between here and there, between yesterday and tomorrow. Interspersed with discoveries and reunions, Pierre-Marie Goulet’s film celebrates the power of popular art when its skillful vigor is acknowledged. Jean-Pierre Rehm |
